a striking view of Sky Top.
Duck Pond is one of Mohonk
Preserve's most cherished
features. While large, old
snapping turtles, such as the
one Daniel Smiley Research
Center biologists refer to affec-
tionately as "Old Mossy Head,"
give the impression that Duck Pond has been there
forever, it is, in fact a man-made pond.
The pond was originally built for aesthetic reasons.
There was a watering trough at a spring nearby for
the horses to stop and get a drink from the trek up
the hill from the Testimonial Gateway."
"As the horses were drinking, the guests would have
a nice view of the pond and could look up towards
Sky Top."
