The Mohonk Preserve is huge!

6500 acres, containing 70 miles of trails available for hiking, biking, horseback riding etc. and of course,
walking your dog. We are very lucky to have this resource so close to us and with so few limitations, there are a few however...

The Preserve is not free, memberships are the best deal if you plan to visit often, we go year round and are proud to help support it this way. The are also day passes available at the trailheads and beautiful visitor center.

Mohonk Trails

Dogs are welcome in most areas of the Preserve but with some rules:

  • Dogs are welcome to accompany you while you enjoy the Preserve, but in keeping with our policies and New York State law, they must be kept on a leash and under the owner's control at all times. This is because off-leash dogs often harass and threaten wildlife, are injured by wildlife (such as porcupines and poisonous snakes), and get lost. They may also make other visitors uncomfortable and be impounded. Tying a dog up at the bottom of a cliff while climbing is not "under your control."
  • Dogs are not allowed on the grounds of the neighboring Mohonk Mountain House, on Preserve carriage roads during cross-country ski season, or in any Preserve ponds or streams.
  • Please remove pet waste from the trail and carriage roads, which helps ensure a more pleasant experience for visitors and keep streams and other water systems clean.
  • The Preserve also has a great website with more info here: Mohonk Preserve | Suggested Hikes
